Since deep learning algorithms were introduced and GPU started accelerating computation, AI has become the hottest topic and start influencing almost all aspects of our society. For example, AmazonGo will make the current grocery store operate without cashiers and checkout stations, and autonomous vehicles will change the current transportation systems and the concept of car-ownership without requiring driver’s licence. Moreover, AI and machine learning are the core and basic technologies for the 4th industrial revolution which is expected to change current manufacturing and consuming paradigms drastically.

In this talk, I will review the basic concepts of AI, machine learning (including deep learning) and computer vision, and then introduce a couple of their real-world applications to visual surveillance and autonomous driving which are being investigated in GIST. The goal of the visual surveillance project is developing an intelligent visual surveillance system which has functions of global tracking and abnormal event detection in almost real-time for large-scale video input. For the autonomous driving project this year we will demonstrate the framework for the self-driving vehicle and its operation in the GIST campus with basic functions.
