Intrinsic chaotic dynamics in the nervous system have long been recognised in neuroscience and have been shown to be integral to the operation of the brain in both normal and pathological states. When properly controlled, such brain chaos can provide a great deal of computational power by exploring many possibilities at high speed, which is believed to a strong candidate for the dynamical substrate of creativity and free will. Chaos operates not only in the cortical regions associated with higher-level information processing but also in neural circuitry responsible for generating motor behaviours. The latter case is closely related to the interaction with the physical body and its environment, emphasising the 'embodied' nature of such chaotic behaviours where the brain is capable of inducing sustained neuro-physical chaos under the continuous presence of external stimuli. This gives an insight into the possible role of chaos in the embodied intelligence - the idea that intelligence always requires a physical body interacting with the environment. Particularly, chaotic dynamics can take place in the self-organisation and exploration of the behavioural patterns of an agent through the dynamical coupling among brain, body, and environment which is one of the essential components of the embodied intelligence. Following brief illustrations about the embodiment and chaotic dynamics, we will look into some modelling studies on the exploitation of chaos for learning neural patterns as well as the generation and exploration of self-organised robotic behaviours.
